HomeTap & Toilet RepairsToilet Not Flushing

Toilet not flushing is frustrating. You press the button or pull the handle and nothing happens, or the flush is so weak it doesn't clear the bowl. It's usually a problem with the flush mechanism inside the cistern, a blockage in the flush pipe, or the cistern's not filling properly.

We'll diagnose the fault, fix or replace the flush mechanism, clear any blockages, and test it. Most faults are fixed in 30 minutes to an hour. We carry the common parts on the van.

There's no call-out fee when you book with us. We'll quote you before we start, and our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan.

Why Toilets Don't Flush Properly

⚠️

Flush lever or button broken

You press the button or pull the handle and it's floppy or doesn't do anything. The lever arm inside the cistern has snapped, the chain's come off, or the button mechanism's broken. We'll lift the cistern lid and reconnect or replace it.

⚠️

Flush valve seal perished

The rubber seal at the bottom of the cistern (the bit that lifts when you flush to let water out) has perished or doesn't seal properly. Water dribbles out constantly instead of flushing in one go. The flush is weak and doesn't clear the bowl. We'll replace the seal or the whole flush valve.

⚠️

Cistern not filling or water level too low

The cistern's only half full, so there's not enough water to flush properly. Either the ballvalve's set too low, the supply's restricted, or there's a leak. We'll check the water level and adjust or fix the ballvalve.

⚠️

Blockage in the flush pipe or rim

The flush pipe (the large pipe from the cistern to the pan) or the rim holes inside the toilet bowl are blocked with limescale. Water can't flow fast enough to flush properly. We'll clear the blockage or descale the rim holes.

⚠️

Old siphon-type cistern worn out

Older toilets use a siphon flush mechanism (a large plastic cylinder inside the cistern). The rubber diaphragm inside wears out and the flush stops working. These are common in pre-2000 toilets. We'll replace the siphon or convert it to a modern flush valve.

What to Check Before We Arrive

1

Lift the cistern lid

Take the lid off the cistern (lift it straight up, it's not screwed down). Look inside. Is the water level high enough (should be about an inch below the overflow pipe)? Does the flush mechanism move when you press the button? Is anything obviously broken?

2

Try flushing and watch what happens

Press the flush button and watch inside the cistern. Does the flush valve lift? Does water rush out? If the flush valve lifts but the flush is weak, the valve seal's perished. If nothing moves, the flush mechanism's broken.

3

Check if the cistern's filling

After you flush, does the cistern refill? If it doesn't, the water supply's off or the ballvalve's seized. Check the isolation valve on the pipe feeding the cistern. Make sure it's turned on.

4

Try a bucket flush

Pour a bucket of water (about 6 litres) directly into the toilet bowl in one go. If it flushes properly, the cistern and flush mechanism are working. If it doesn't flush, there's a blockage in the pan or the waste pipe.

How We Fix Non-Flushing Toilets

1

Diagnose the fault

We'll lift the cistern lid and check what's wrong. Broken flush lever? Perished flush valve seal? Low water level? Blockage? Each fault has a different fix. Most are simple part replacements.

2

Replace the flush mechanism

If the flush lever, button, or mechanism's broken, we'll replace it. Modern flush valves are better than old siphons and easier to service. We'll fit a new one, adjust it, and test it.

3

Replace the flush valve seal

If the flush is weak because the seal's perished, we'll replace it. We'll turn off the water, flush to empty the cistern, unscrew the flush valve, replace the seal, and refit it. If the whole valve's old, we'll replace the complete unit.

4

Adjust or replace the ballvalve

If the water level's too low, we'll adjust the ballvalve to raise it. If the ballvalve's seized or faulty, we'll replace it. The cistern needs to be nearly full for a proper flush.

5

Clear blockages

If the flush pipe or rim holes are blocked, we'll clear them with descaler, a wire brush, or by rodding. Once water can flow freely, the flush will work properly.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does it cost to fix a toilet that won't flush in Hull?
Flush mechanism repair costs £80 to £130. Flush valve seal replacement costs £90 to £150. Complete flush valve or siphon replacement costs £120 to £180. We'll quote you once we've diagnosed the fault.
How long does it take to fix a non-flushing toilet?
Most fixes are done in 30 minutes to an hour. Simple fixes (reconnect a chain, adjust the ballvalve) are quick. Part replacements (flush valve, siphon) take longer. We carry the common parts on the van, so it's usually a same-visit fix.
Why does my toilet flush weakly?
The flush valve seal's perished and doesn't lift properly, so water dribbles out instead of rushing out in one go. Or the water level in the cistern's too low. Or the flush pipe or rim holes are blocked. We'll diagnose which it is and fix it.
Can I flush it manually while it's broken?
Yes. Pour a bucket of water (about 6 litres) directly into the toilet bowl in one go. It'll flush manually. This works until we fix the cistern. Don't keep doing it long-term, you'll waste water and it's a pain.
What's the difference between a siphon and a flush valve?
A siphon is the old-style flush mechanism (a large plastic cylinder inside the cistern). It's reliable but when the diaphragm inside wears out, it stops working. A flush valve is the modern mechanism (a valve that lifts when you press the button). It's easier to service and lasts longer.
Can you convert my siphon to a flush valve?
Sometimes. If the cistern has a large central opening at the bottom, we can fit a flush valve instead of a siphon. If the opening's too small, we can't. We'll check when we're there. Conversion costs about the same as replacing the siphon.
What if the flush button is stuck down?
The button mechanism's jammed or broken. We'll remove the button, check the mechanism, and replace it if needed. Sometimes it's just gunked up with limescale and needs cleaning. We'll sort it.
Can a partially blocked drain stop my toilet flushing?
Yes, if your soil stack or main drain is partially blocked, the toilet won't flush properly because there's nowhere for the water to go. You'll notice other symptoms too: gurgling from drains, slow-draining sinks, or bad smells. That's a drain blockage issue, not a cistern problem, and needs jetting or rodding to clear.
