Cistern problems are annoying. It won't stop filling and water runs constantly. It won't fill at all. It leaks from the overflow or the base. Most faults are down to the ballvalve or the flush valve inside, and both are easy fixes.

We'll diagnose the fault, replace the failed part (ballvalve, flush valve seal, inlet valve), and test it before we leave. Most cistern repairs are done in 30 minutes. We carry the common parts on the van.

There's no call-out fee when you book with us. We'll quote you before we start, and our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan.

Common Cistern Faults

⚠️

Cistern won't stop filling

Water keeps running into the cistern and out the overflow pipe. The ballvalve's failed and isn't shutting off. You're wasting water (and money if you're on a meter). We'll replace the ballvalve with a modern quiet-fill valve that won't fail for years.

⚠️

Cistern won't fill at all

You flush and the cistern doesn't refill. Either the water supply's turned off (check the isolation valve on the pipe feeding the cistern), the ballvalve's seized shut, or there's a blockage in the inlet. We'll diagnose and fix it.

⚠️

Water running into the toilet bowl

You hear water trickling into the toilet bowl constantly and the cistern refills every few minutes. The flush valve seal at the bottom of the cistern has perished. Water dribbles through even though you've not flushed. We'll replace the seal or the whole flush valve.

⚠️

Cistern leaking from the base

Water's leaking from where the cistern meets the toilet pan. The rubber donut washer between them has perished. We'll need to unbolt the cistern, replace the washer, and reseal it. Takes about an hour.

⚠️

Overflow pipe dripping outside

There's a small pipe sticking out of the wall outside (usually near the toilet window) and it's dripping or running constantly. The cistern's overfilling because the ballvalve isn't shutting off. Fix it or you're paying for wasted water.

What to Check Before We Arrive

1

Check the isolation valve

There's usually a small valve on the pipe feeding the cistern (under the cistern or on the wall nearby). Make sure it's turned on. If it's off, turn it on and see if the cistern fills. If there's no isolation valve, check the main stop cock under the kitchen sink.

2

Lift the cistern lid and look inside

Take the lid off the cistern (lift it straight up, it's not screwed down). Look at the water level. If it's overflowing into the overflow pipe, the ballvalve's failed. If it's empty and not filling, the ballvalve's seized or the supply's off.

3

Listen for running water

If you can hear water running but the cistern looks full, water's dribbling through the flush valve into the toilet bowl. The flush valve seal's perished. This wastes water and costs you money if you're on a meter.

4

Check for leaks around the base

Look where the cistern bolts to the toilet pan. If there's water leaking from there, the washer's perished. You'll need to turn off the water and don't use the toilet until we've fixed it, or you'll flood the bathroom floor.

How We Fix Cistern Problems

1

Diagnose the fault

We'll lift the cistern lid and check what's failed. Ballvalve not shutting off? Flush valve seal perished? Inlet blocked? Cistern cracked? Each fault has a different fix. Most are simple part replacements.

2

Replace the ballvalve

We'll turn off the water supply, disconnect the old ballvalve, and fit a new one. Modern ballvalves are quieter and more reliable than the old brass ballcocks. We'll adjust the water level so it stops just below the overflow.

3

Replace the flush valve seal

We'll turn off the water, flush to empty the cistern, unscrew the flush valve from the bottom, replace the rubber seal, and refit it. If the whole flush valve's old and crusty, we'll replace the complete unit.

4

Fix cistern-to-pan leaks

We'll turn off the water, unbolt the cistern from the pan, lift it off, replace the rubber donut washer, and bolt it back down. We'll check the bolts aren't over-tightened (that cracks the porcelain). Takes about an hour.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does toilet cistern repair cost in Hull?
Ballvalve replacement costs £80 to £130. Flush valve seal replacement costs £90 to £150. A complete flush valve replacement costs £120 to £180. Cistern-to-pan seal replacement costs £120 to £180. We'll quote you once we've diagnosed the fault.
How long does cistern repair take?
Most repairs are done in 30 minutes to an hour. Ballvalve and flush valve seal replacements are quick (20-30 minutes). Cistern-to-pan seal replacement takes longer (about an hour) because we need to unbolt and lift the cistern. We carry the common parts on the van.
Why won't my cistern stop filling?
The ballvalve's failed and isn't shutting off. Either the washer inside has worn out, the arm's bent, or it's scaled up with limescale. We'll replace it with a new ballvalve. Modern ones don't fail as often as the old brass ballcocks.
Can I turn the water off myself?
Yes. There should be an isolation valve on the pipe feeding the cistern. Turn it clockwise to close it. If there isn't one, turn off the main stop cock under the kitchen sink. This stops the cistern filling until we fix it.
Why does water keep running into the toilet bowl?
The flush valve seal at the bottom of the cistern has perished. Water dribbles through the seal even though you've not flushed. You'll hear the cistern refilling every few minutes. We'll replace the seal or the whole flush valve if it's old.
Can I flush the toilet while it's broken?
If the cistern won't fill, you can't flush it normally, but you can pour a bucket of water into the toilet bowl to flush it manually. If the cistern's overflowing, you can still flush, but you're wasting water. Turn off the isolation valve until we fix it.
Should I replace the whole toilet?
Not unless the cistern's cracked or the toilet pan's damaged. Cistern internals (ballvalve, flush valve) are cheap to replace and last years. A new toilet costs £100-£300 plus fitting. Only replace the toilet if the porcelain's cracked or it's leaking from the pan itself.
Why is my cistern filling so slowly?
Usually a partially blocked fill valve or low mains pressure. In Hull, we see this a lot in houses with old galvanised pipework where internal corrosion restricts flow. Simple valve clean takes 20 minutes. If it's a mains pressure issue affecting the whole house, we can fit a pressure booster pump.
