HomeTap & Toilet RepairsMixer Tap Installation

Fitting a new mixer tap sounds simple, but there's more to it than screwing it on. You need to connect hot and cold supplies, seal it properly so it doesn't leak, and make sure the tails are the right length for your pipes. If you get it wrong, you'll flood the place.

We'll fit your new tap (kitchen sink, bathroom basin, bath, whatever), connect it to the existing pipes, test it for leaks, and tidy up. Most tap installations are done in an hour. If your pipes are ancient or the tap needs different fittings, it might take longer.

There's no call-out fee when you book with us. Bring your own tap or we can supply one. We'll quote you before we start, and our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan.

What to Check Before Buying a Tap

Number of tap holes

Count the holes in your sink or basin. One hole = monobloc mixer tap (hot and cold feeds through one spout). Two holes = pillar taps or a two-hole mixer. Three holes = bridge mixer with separate hot and cold handles. Buy the wrong type and it won't fit.

Tap tail length

The threaded tails on the underside of the tap need to be long enough to reach through the sink and stick out far enough to attach fittings. Standard tails are fine for most sinks. If you've got a thick worktop or a deep basin, you might need extended tails.

Water pressure requirements

Some mixer taps (especially shower mixer taps) need minimum water pressure to work properly. If you've got low pressure (common in older Hull properties with a loft tank and no pump), check the tap's minimum pressure rating before you buy it.

Hot and cold supply compatibility

Most mixer taps need balanced hot and cold pressure. If your cold water's mains-fed (high pressure) and your hot water's from a loft tank (low pressure), a standard mixer tap might not work properly. You might need a tap designed for unequal pressures or a pump.

What We Do When Fitting a Mixer Tap

1

Turn off the water

We'll turn off the hot and cold supplies using the isolation valves under the sink. If there aren't any, we'll turn off the main stop cock and drain the hot water system if needed. Can't fit a tap with water flowing.

2

Remove the old tap

We'll disconnect the hot and cold feeds, undo the backnut holding the tap to the sink, and lift the old tap out. Old taps are often crusted with limescale and muck, so they don't come off nicely. We'll clean the sink around the tap hole before fitting the new one.

3

Fit the new tap

We'll feed the tap tails through the hole, fit the rubber or plastic gasket underneath (stops leaks), and tighten the backnut to secure it. We won't over-tighten it (that cracks sinks). We'll make sure the tap's aligned straight.

4

Connect the supplies

We'll connect the hot and cold feeds to the tap tails using flexible hoses or copper pipe and compression fittings. If the old pipes don't reach or they're the wrong size, we'll extend them or fit adaptors. We'll check everything's tight.

5

Test for leaks

We'll turn the water back on and run the tap to check for leaks at the connections, around the base, and at the spout. We'll adjust or reseal anything that drips. Once it's all sound, job done.

Choosing the Right Mixer Tap

Kitchen mixer taps

Pull-out spray taps for vegetable washing, swivel spouts for double sinks, boiling water taps if you want instant hot water.

Basin mixer taps

Standard height for everyday basins, tall taps for countertop bowls, wall-mounted if you want a minimalist look.

Bath mixer taps

Deck-mounted for bath rim fitting, freestanding for roll-top baths, shower mixer with diverter if you want a bath-shower combo.

Check your water pressure

High pressure systems need standard taps. Low pressure (gravity-fed) needs taps rated for 0.1 bar or a pump.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does mixer tap installation cost in Hull?
Fitting a tap you've bought yourself costs £80 to £150 if it's straightforward access. Awkward access (tight space, old pipes, no isolation valves) costs £120 to £200. If we supply the tap as well, it's £150 to £300 depending on the tap. We'll quote you before we start.
How long does tap installation take?
About an hour for a straightforward kitchen or basin tap. Longer if the old tap's seized on, the pipes need extending, or there are no isolation valves and we need to drain the system. We'll give you a time estimate when we've seen the job.
Can I buy the mixer tap myself?
Yes. Buy it from wherever you like (Screwfix, Toolstation, online, plumbers' merchant). Just make sure it's the right type for your sink (monobloc, two-hole, three-hole) and check the pressure requirements. We'll fit whatever you've bought.
Will you supply the tap if I don't have one?
Yes. Tell us what you want (kitchen sink tap, bathroom basin tap, bath tap) and we'll source one and fit it. We'll quote you for the tap and fitting together. We use decent mid-range taps (not cheap rubbish that leaks after six months).
What if my pipes don't reach the new tap?
We'll extend them using flexible hoses or copper pipe. Most mixer taps come with flexible hoses that make connection easier. If the old pipes are in a weird position or the wrong size, we'll adapt them. It's a common problem, especially in older properties.
Does a mixer tap need isolation valves?
It's a good idea. Isolation valves on the hot and cold feeds let you turn the tap off without draining the whole system. If you don't have them, we can fit them while we're there. Adds about £30-£50 to the job but saves hassle next time the tap needs work.
Will you remove my old mixer tap?
Yes, if you want us to. We'll chuck it in the van and dispose of it. Most old taps are scrap brass (worth a few pence at the scrappy) so we'll take them.
Will you fit a mixer tap I bought online?
Yes, as long as it's a proper tap and not some cheap rubbish. We've fitted taps from Amazon, eBay, Victorian Plumbing, everywhere. Just make sure it's the right type for your sink. If it's faulty or missing parts, we can't work miracles.
