HomeTap & Toilet RepairsDual Flush Mechanism Repair

Dual flush mechanisms (the ones with two buttons, one for a small flush and one for a large flush) are great for saving water, but they're more complex than single flush and they fail more often. Buttons stick, cables snap, or the flush valve doesn't seal properly.

We'll diagnose the fault, replace the failed part (flush valve, button mechanism, cable), and test both flush options. Most dual flush repairs are done in 30 minutes to an hour. We carry the common parts on the van.

There's no call-out fee when you book with us. We'll quote you before we start, and our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan.

Common Dual Flush Faults

⚠️

One button works, the other doesn't

You press the small flush button and nothing happens, but the large flush works (or vice versa). The button mechanism's broken, the cable's snapped, or the flush valve's partially jammed. We'll lift the cistern lid and diagnose which it is.

⚠️

Both buttons stuck down or floppy

You press either button and it's stuck down or floppy and doesn't spring back. The button mechanism's broken or gunked up with limescale. We'll remove the button panel and replace or clean the mechanism.

⚠️

Flush keeps running after you press the button

You press the button, it flushes, but water keeps running into the toilet bowl and the cistern doesn't stop refilling. The flush valve seal's perished or the flush valve mechanism's stuck open. We'll replace the seal or the whole flush valve.

⚠️

Weak or incomplete flush on both buttons

You press either button and the flush is weak, or it doesn't clear the bowl properly. The flush valve seal's worn, the water level's too low, or the flush valve mechanism's not opening fully. We'll check and fix it.

⚠️

Button panel loose or wonky

The button panel's loose in the cistern lid or it's sitting at an angle. The clips or screws have broken or worked loose. We'll refit it properly or replace the panel if it's damaged.

What to Check Before We Arrive

1

Test both buttons

Press the small flush button and see what happens. Does it flush? Does it flush weakly? Does nothing happen? Now press the large flush button. Does that work? Knowing which button's faulty helps us diagnose before we arrive.

2

Lift the cistern lid

Take the lid off the cistern (carefully, dual flush lids are often connected to the button panel). Look inside. Can you see the flush valve mechanism? Press the buttons and watch what happens. Does the valve move? Do both cables pull properly?

3

Check for running water

After you flush, does the water keep running into the toilet bowl? If yes, the flush valve seal's perished and isn't sealing properly. You're wasting water until it's fixed.

4

Try pressing the button panel gently

Is the button panel loose or rattling in the lid? Does it sit flush with the lid? If it's loose or wonky, the clips or fixings have failed. We'll refit or replace it.

How We Repair Dual Flush Mechanisms

1

Remove the cistern lid and button panel

Dual flush lids are usually connected to the button panel with a screw or twist-lock fitting. We'll carefully remove the lid and panel so we can access the flush valve and button mechanism inside.

2

Diagnose the fault

We'll test the buttons and watch what happens inside the cistern. Broken cable? Stuck flush valve? Perished seal? Button mechanism jammed? Each fault has a different fix.

3

Replace the button mechanism or cables

If the button mechanism's broken or the cables have snapped, we'll replace them. Most dual flush systems use interchangeable parts. We carry common spares (Thomas Dudley, Geberit, generic fittings) on the van.

4

Replace the flush valve or seal

If the flush valve seal's perished or the valve's stuck, we'll turn off the water, drain the cistern, and replace the seal or the complete flush valve. Modern dual flush valves are better than old ones and last longer.

5

Test both flush options

We'll test the small flush and the large flush to make sure both work properly. We'll check the cistern fills correctly, stops at the right level, and doesn't leak. We'll refit the lid and button panel and tidy up.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does dual flush mechanism repair cost in Hull?
Button mechanism replacement costs £90 to £140. Flush valve seal replacement costs £100 to £150. Complete dual flush valve replacement costs £130 to £180. We'll quote you once we've diagnosed the fault.
How long does dual flush repair take?
About 30 minutes to an hour for most repairs. Button mechanism and seal replacements are quick. Complete flush valve replacement takes longer. We carry common spares on the van, so it's usually a same-visit fix.
Why do dual flush mechanisms fail more than single flush?
Because they're more complex. Two buttons, two cables, a flush valve that opens partially or fully depending which button you press. More moving parts = more things to go wrong. They're still worth having (they save water), but they need servicing more often.
Can you convert it to a single flush?
You could, but there's not much point. If the dual flush mechanism's failed, it's cheaper to just replace the dual flush valve than to rip it out and fit a single flush. The parts cost about the same.
Why does the small flush not work but the large flush does?
The small flush cable's snapped or the button mechanism's broken on that side. The large flush uses a different cable or mechanism, so it still works. We'll replace the broken part.
Will you have the parts for my toilet?
We carry spares for common makes (Thomas Dudley, Geberit, generic fittings). If it's an obscure make or a concealed cistern, we might need to order parts. Let us know the toilet make when you book and we'll bring the right spares if we've got them.
Why does water keep running after I flush?
The flush valve seal's perished and doesn't seal properly after the flush. Water keeps dribbling through into the toilet bowl. The cistern refills constantly. We'll replace the seal or the whole flush valve if it's old.
Can I use the toilet while it's broken?
If one button works, use that one. If neither works, you can flush manually by pouring a bucket of water into the toilet bowl. If water's running constantly, turn off the isolation valve on the supply pipe until we fix it, or you're wasting water.
