HomeRadiators & HeatingCentral Heating Pump Repair

Your central heating pump circulates hot water from the boiler through your radiators. When it fails, your boiler might fire up but the heat doesn't reach the radiators. You're left with a working boiler, cold radiators, and no heating. Pumps fail for several reasons: worn bearings make them noisy, seized impellers stop them turning, or the motor burns out completely Common across Hull, from Spring Bank to Newland Avenue.

Most pumps last 10-15 years, so if yours is older and failed, replacement makes more sense than repair.

We diagnose pump faults quickly. Is the pump seized, is it running but not circulating, is it leaking, or has the speed setting failed? Once we know what's wrong, we either repair it (if it's a simple issue) or replace it with a new, reliable pump. We carry common pumps on the van for most UK heating systems.

Signs Your Heating Pump Has Failed

⚠️

Boiler on but radiators cold

The boiler is firing and getting hot, but the radiators stay cold. The pump isn't circulating water through the system. Check the pump, it might be completely silent (seized) or humming (jammed impeller).

⚠️

Loud grinding or squealing from the pump

Bearings inside the pump are worn. The noise gets worse over time. Left alone, the pump will seize completely. Replace it before it fails and leaves you without heating.

⚠️

Pump is hot to touch

The pump motor is overheating, usually because the impeller is jammed or the bearings are shot. It'll fail soon. If it's too hot to touch, turn it off and call us.

⚠️

Water leaking from the pump body

The pump shaft seal has failed. Water drips from the pump casing. This won't fix itself, the seal is internal and the pump needs replacing.

⚠️

Heating works intermittently

Sometimes the radiators heat, sometimes they don't. The pump is on its way out, the motor cuts in and out, or the impeller sticks and unsticks. Replace it before it fails completely in winter.

Quick Checks Before Calling

1

Check the pump is powered on

Sounds obvious, but check the pump has power. Many pumps have an isolator switch nearby. Make sure it's on. If there's no power to the pump, check the fuse or circuit breaker.

2

Feel if the pump is vibrating

Put your hand on the pump body when the heating is on. You should feel vibration from the motor. If it's completely silent and still, the pump is seized or the motor has failed.

3

Check the pump speed setting

Most pumps have a speed dial (1, 2, 3). If it's set to 1 (slowest), radiators far from the boiler might not heat. Try increasing it to 2 or 3 and see if that helps.

4

Look for error codes on the boiler

Modern boilers display error codes when the pump fails. Common ones are 'F1', 'E133', or 'flame failure'. Check your boiler manual or call us with the code.

How We Repair or Replace Pumps

Most pump faults need replacement rather than repair. Here's our process:

1

Diagnose the fault

We check if the pump has power, if the impeller is seized, if the motor is running, and if water is circulating. We test the speed settings and check for leaks.

2

Attempt to free a seized pump (if possible)

If the impeller is lightly seized (common after summer), we can sometimes free it by removing the central screw and turning the shaft manually. If it frees, it might run for a while, but replacement is safer.

3

Isolate and drain

We turn off the heating, isolate the pump with the valves either side, and drain the water from that section. No need to drain the whole system if the pump has isolation valves.

4

Remove old pump and fit new

We disconnect the old pump, unbolt it, and lift it out. We fit the new pump, ensuring the flow direction is correct, and tighten all connections. We check the electrical connections are secure.

5

Test and bleed

We open the isolation valves, bleed air from the pump, and power it on. We check it runs smoothly, circulates water properly, and doesn't leak. We set the speed appropriately and test all radiators heat.

Common Pump Problems

Here's what causes heating pumps to fail in Hull homes:

Seized impeller from sludge

Sludge in the system gets into the pump and jams the impeller. The motor hums but the impeller won't turn. Power flush the system when fitting a new pump or it'll clog the new one too.

Worn bearings

Pump bearings wear out over 10-15 years. The pump gets noisy, then starts overheating, then fails. Once bearings are worn, replacement is the only fix.

Failed motor winding

The electric motor inside burns out. The pump is completely dead, no hum, no vibration, nothing. Replace the whole pump.

Corroded pump body

External corrosion weakens the pump casing. Eventually it cracks and leaks. This is common on old pumps in damp airing cupboards. No repair possible, fit a new pump.

Incorrect pump speed setting

Not a fault, but if the pump is set too slow, distant radiators won't heat. Increase the speed setting. If it's already on maximum and radiators are still cold, the pump is undersized or failing.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does heating pump replacement cost in Hull?
Standard pump replacement costs £180-£250 including the pump across Hull and surrounding areas. High-efficiency pumps (which use far less electricity) cost £220-£280. If we need to fit isolation valves, add £40-£70. Most replacements take 2-3 hours.
How long does pump replacement take?
Most pump replacements take 2-3 hours. If the pump has isolation valves, it's quicker. If we need to drain part of the system or fit valves, it takes closer to 3-4 hours, whether you're in Newland Avenue, Cottingham, or Spring Bank.
Can you repair the pump or does it need replacing?
We can sometimes free a seized pump as a temporary fix, but pumps rarely repair economically. Replacement with a new, reliable pump is better long-term. New pumps come with a manufacturer's warranty.
Will a new pump be more efficient?
Yes. Modern A-rated pumps use 80% less electricity than old fixed-speed pumps. They adjust speed automatically based on demand. Over the pump's lifetime, the electricity saving pays for the upgrade.
My pump is making a loud noise, is it about to fail?
Probably. Grinding or squealing means bearings are worn. It'll get louder and eventually seize. Replace it now before it fails completely in winter and leaves you without heating.
Can I replace the pump myself?
If you're competent with plumbing and electrics, yes, but pumps are usually in tight spaces, connections are often seized, and getting the air out afterward is fiddly. Most DIY attempts create leaks. We carry the right tools and pumps and guarantee the work.
What if the new pump fails?
All pump replacements carry a 12-month guarantee on our work. The pump itself has a manufacturer's warranty (usually 2 years). If it fails within the guarantee period, we'll replace it at no charge for labour.
Should I powerflush when replacing the pump?
If your system has sludge (check the water when we drain it), yes. Sludge will clog the new pump within months. Power flush, fit the new pump, add inhibitor. The pump will last 15+ years in a clean system.
