HomeLeak DetectionUnderground Pipe Leak Detection

An underground leak in your supply pipe can waste thousands of litres a day without you noticing, until the water bill arrives or your garden starts flooding. The problem is finding exactly where the leak is. Dig in the wrong place and you've destroyed your driveway for nothing. Underground leak detection requires specialist equipment: acoustic listening devices that hear water escaping under pressure, and sometimes trace gas detection to pinpoint leaks in plastic pipes Common across Hull, from Spring Bank to Newland Avenue.

We locate underground leaks using acoustic sensors placed along the pipe route. Water escaping under pressure creates a distinct sound that we can hear through metres of soil. Once we've pinpointed the leak to within half a metre, we excavate carefully, expose the damaged section, and repair or replace it. We work with all pipe materials, lead, copper, plastic, and iron, and make good the excavation afterward.

We operate across all Hull areas. Underground leak detection and repair typically takes a full day. All repairs carry a 12-month guarantee.

Signs of an Underground Leak

⚠️

Water meter running with everything off

Turn off all taps, appliances, and the stopcock inside. If your external meter is still spinning, water is leaking between the meter and your house. That's the underground supply pipe.

⚠️

Wet patch in the garden or driveway

A patch that never dries out, even in hot weather, suggests water is leaking underground and rising to the surface. If it's in a line following the pipe route, that's a clear sign.

⚠️

Sudden drop in water pressure

If all your taps have gone weak and neighbours' pressure is fine, you've got a significant leak in your supply pipe. Water is escaping before it reaches the house.

⚠️

Unexpected water bill spike

Your bill has doubled or tripled without any change in usage. A hidden underground leak can waste 50,000+ litres per month. Check your meter immediately.

⚠️

Sound of running water outside

At night when it's quiet, you can hear water running near the front of the property. That's the sound of water escaping from the underground pipe under pressure.

Check Your Responsibility First

1

Locate your property boundary

In the UK, you're responsible for the supply pipe from your property boundary to your house. The water company owns the pipe from the main in the street to your boundary. Check where the boundary is.

2

Find your stopcock and meter

Your internal stopcock is where you control the supply. The meter is usually at the boundary in a pit. If the leak is between the meter and your house, it's your responsibility.

3

Turn off the stopcock

Turn off your internal stopcock to isolate your property. If the meter stops spinning, the leak is on your side. If it keeps spinning, the leak is on the water company's side, call them.

4

Contact your insurer

Home insurance sometimes covers underground supply pipe leaks under 'trace and access' or 'underground services' cover. Check your policy before paying for detection and excavation.

How We Locate Underground Leaks

Underground leaks need specialist detection equipment. Here's how we find them:

1

Confirm the leak location (inside or outside)

We test your internal plumbing to rule out leaks inside the house. If all internal systems are tight and the meter is still running, the leak is underground.

2

Trace the pipe route

We use pipe locators to trace the route of your underground supply pipe from the boundary to the house. This tells us where to focus our listening equipment.

3

Acoustic listening along the route

We place acoustic sensors at intervals along the pipe route. Water escaping under pressure creates a distinct sound. We pinpoint the loudest point, which is where the leak is.

4

Trace gas detection (if needed)

For plastic pipes (which don't transmit sound well), we inject a harmless trace gas into the pipe. The gas escapes where the leak is, and we detect it at ground level with a sensitive probe.

5

Excavate and repair

Once we've pinpointed the leak, we dig down carefully to expose the pipe. We cut out the damaged section and replace it with new pipe and proper fittings. We pressure-test before backfilling.

Common Causes of Underground Leaks

Underground pipes fail for several reasons, especially in Hull's clay soil which shifts with the seasons:

Corrosion in old metal pipes

Lead and iron supply pipes installed decades ago corrode from the outside in. Eventually they split or develop pinholes. Hull has thousands of properties still on original lead supply pipes.

Ground movement cracking pipes

Clay soil expands when wet and shrinks when dry. This movement can crack rigid pipes or pull apart joints. It's especially common in dry summers followed by wet winters.

Frost damage

Shallow supply pipes can freeze in hard winters. Water expands as it freezes, cracking the pipe. You won't notice until it thaws and starts leaking. Proper burial depth prevents this.

Poor original installation

Pipes laid directly on stones, not bedded properly, or with weak joints fail over time. We see a lot of this in properties from the 1960s-70s when plastic pipe first appeared.

Damage during building work

Someone dug near the pipe and nicked it with a spade. The damage weakens the pipe and it fails months or years later. Always check pipe routes before digging.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does underground leak detection cost in Hull?
Acoustic leak detection costs £150-£250 across Hull and surrounding areas. Excavation and repair of the damaged section costs £200-£400 depending on depth and pipe material. Full supply pipe replacement from boundary to house costs £800-£1,500 depending on distance and surface type.
How long does underground leak detection take?
Locating the leak takes 2-4 hours depending on the pipe length and how clear the signal is. Excavation and repair add another 3-5 hours. Expect a full day for detection, repair, and reinstatement combined, whether you're in Newland Avenue, Cottingham, or Spring Bank.
Can you find leaks in plastic pipes?
Yes, but plastic doesn't transmit sound as well as metal, so acoustic listening is less effective. We use trace gas detection instead, we inject a safe gas into the pipe and detect where it escapes at ground level.
Will you have to dig up my driveway?
Only if that's where the leak is. We locate it accurately first so we're digging in the right place. We excavate the minimum necessary, repair the pipe, and reinstate the surface. If it's under tarmac or paving, there's an extra cost for reinstatement.
Is the leak my responsibility or the water company's?
You're responsible for the pipe from your property boundary to your house. The water company owns the pipe from the street main to your boundary. We can determine which side the leak is on and advise accordingly.
Should I repair the leak or replace the whole pipe?
If the pipe is old lead or corroded iron, replacement is better long-term. If it's relatively new copper or plastic and just one section has failed, repair is fine. We'll advise honestly based on the pipe condition.
Will my home insurance cover this?
Some policies cover 'trace and access' for underground leaks. Check your policy under 'underground services' or 'water supply pipes'. If covered, we can provide itemised invoices for your claim.
How deep are underground supply pipes usually buried?
UK water regulations require minimum 750mm depth to avoid frost. Older pipes are often shallower (450-600mm) which makes them vulnerable to freezing and accidental damage. We bury replacement pipes to the correct depth.
