HomeGeneral PlumbingWater Pressure Issues

Water pressure problems make showers useless, taps dribble, and toilets fill slowly. Low pressure is usually down to old pipes, leaks, or a poor supply from Yorkshire Water. High pressure can burst pipes and damage appliances. Both are fixable.

We'll diagnose the cause, check your supply pressure, test individual taps, and work out what's wrong. Low pressure might need a pump. High pressure might need a pressure reducer. Simple blockages or restrictions we'll clear.

There's no call-out fee when you book with us. We'll quote you for any work needed after we've diagnosed it. Our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan.

Common Causes of Low Pressure

Partially closed stopcock

Someone's turned the stopcock under the kitchen sink and not opened it fully. It's an easy fix: turn it fully anticlockwise. If you're not getting full pressure from the cold kitchen tap, check the stopcock first.

Supply pipe leak

If you've got a leak on your supply pipe (the pipe from the boundary to your house), you're losing pressure. Check for wet patches in the garden or path. Turn everything off and check if the water meter's still spinning.

Old lead or narrow pipes

Older Hull properties around Spring Bank and Princes Avenue often have old 15mm lead or copper supply pipes. Modern houses use 25mm or 32mm plastic. Narrow pipes restrict flow and reduce pressure. Replacing the supply pipe fixes it.

Yorkshire Water supply pressure low

Some areas of Hull have lower mains pressure than others. If your neighbours have the same problem, it's Yorkshire Water's fault, not yours. They might boost the pressure if enough people complain, but don't hold your breath.

Scale build-up in pipes or taps

Hull water's moderately hard. Over time, limescale builds up inside pipes, taps, and valves, restricting flow. If only one tap's affected, it's the tap. If all taps are weak, it's the pipes. Descaling or replacing fixes it.

Common Causes of High Pressure

Mains pressure too high

Yorkshire Water supplies Hull, and some areas have high mains pressure (over 3-4 bar). High pressure can burst pipes, damage washing machines and dishwashers, and cause taps to hammer when you turn them off. A pressure reducer valve fixes it.

Unvented cylinder pressure set wrong

If you've got an unvented hot water cylinder with a pressure-reducing valve on the supply, it might be set too high. We'll check the PRV and adjust it to the right pressure (usually 2.5-3 bar).

Water hammer after closing taps

You turn a tap off and the pipes bang or shudder. This is water hammer, caused by high pressure and loose pipes. A pressure reducer helps, or we can fit shock arrestors or secure the pipes better.

How We Diagnose Pressure Problems

1

Test the mains pressure

We'll connect a pressure gauge to an outside tap or the cold kitchen tap and check the static pressure (with no taps running). Normal is 1-3 bar. Below 1 bar is low. Above 4 bar is high. This tells us if it's a supply problem or a plumbing problem.

2

Check individual taps

We'll test each tap to see if the problem's specific to one tap (blocked aerator, faulty valve) or across the whole house (supply issue, pipe restriction).

3

Check for leaks

We'll check if you've got a leak somewhere that's dropping the pressure. Turn everything off and check if the water meter's still ticking. If it is, there's a leak.

4

Recommend a solution

Low pressure: we might recommend a pump, replacing the supply pipe, or clearing blockages. High pressure: we'll fit a pressure reducer. Simple restrictions: we'll clear them. We'll quote you for the work.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does it cost to fix water pressure in Hull?
Diagnosis costs £85 to £120. If you need a pressure reducer, it's £150 to £250 fitted. A booster pump for a shower costs £250 to £400. Replacing a narrow supply pipe costs £400 to £800. We'll quote you once we've diagnosed the cause.
What's normal water pressure?
1 to 3 bar is normal. Below 1 bar is low (showers will be rubbish). Above 4 bar is high (can damage pipes and appliances). We'll test yours and tell you what you've got.
Can you boost the pressure for just the shower?
Yes. We can fit a shower pump that boosts pressure to the shower only. Costs £250 to £400 fitted. Only works if you've got a hot water cylinder (not a combi boiler).
Will replacing the supply pipe help?
If your supply pipe's old 15mm lead or copper, yes. Modern 25mm or 32mm MDPE pipe has much better flow. Costs £400 to £800 to replace from the boundary to your house, but it's a permanent fix.
Why is the pressure fine at the kitchen tap but rubbish upstairs?
The kitchen tap's usually fed directly from the mains (high pressure). Upstairs taps might be fed from a loft tank (low pressure). This is common in older properties. We can fit a pump to boost the upstairs pressure.
Can high pressure burst pipes?
Yes. High pressure stresses joints and old pipes, especially push-fit joints that weren't fitted quite right. If your pressure's over 4 bar, fit a pressure reducer before something bursts.
Will Yorkshire Water fix my low pressure?
Only if it's their fault (their supply to the boundary is below 1 bar). If the pressure at your boundary is fine but low inside your house, it's your pipes and you pay to fix it. They'll test the boundary pressure for free if you ask.
What causes water hammer?
High pressure and loose pipes. When you turn a tap off quickly, the water slams to a stop and the pipes bang. A pressure reducer helps, or we can fit shock arrestors or secure the pipes better.
