HomeEmergency PlumberToilet Overflow Repair

Toilet overflowing is one of the most stressful plumbing emergencies. Either the bowl's overflowing because it's blocked, or the cistern won't stop filling and water's running out the overflow pipe. Both are fixable, usually within an hour.

If the bowl's overflowing, it's blocked (toilet paper, wet wipes, or something that shouldn't be flushed). If the cistern won't stop filling, it's the ballvalve or the flush valve that's failed. We'll diagnose it, fix it, and test it before we leave.

There's no call-out fee when you book with us. We'll quote you before we start, and our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan.

Signs Your Toilet's About to Overflow

⚠️

Water rising when you flush

You flush and the water level rises almost to the rim before slowly draining. This means a partial blockage. If you flush again, it'll overflow. Stop flushing and call us. Don't keep trying to flush it clear, you'll flood the bathroom.

⚠️

Cistern constantly running

The cistern fills after you flush but doesn't stop. Water runs continuously into the overflow pipe (the small pipe going outside or into the toilet bowl). It's wasting water and will run up your bill if you're on a meter. Usually a failed ballvalve or flush valve seal.

⚠️

Water on the floor around the toilet

If there's water pooling around the base of the toilet, it's either overflowed recently or there's a leak from the cistern, the flush pipe, or the pan connector. Check if it's clean water (cistern leak) or dirty water (bowl overflow or waste leak).

⚠️

Gurgling sound from the toilet

A gurgling noise when you flush or when water drains from sinks or baths means there's a blockage or venting issue in the waste pipe. If it's getting worse, the toilet might overflow next time you flush. Get it checked before it backs up.

⚠️

Overflow pipe dripping outside

The toilet overflow pipe (usually a small plastic pipe sticking out of the wall outside) is dripping or running constantly. This means the cistern's overfilling because the ballvalve isn't shutting off. Fix it quick or you're paying for water that's going down the overflow.

What to Do If Your Toilet Overflows

1

Stop flushing immediately

If the water's rising, don't flush again. Turn off the water supply to the toilet (there's usually an isolation valve on the pipe feeding the cistern). If there isn't one, lift the lid off the cistern and push the ballvalve arm down to stop water flowing in.

2

Mop up the water

If the bowl's overflowed, mop up the water quickly to stop it soaking through the floor or leaking into the ceiling below. Use old towels or a mop and bucket. If it's a lot of water, a wet vac is handy.

3

Try to clear a simple blockage

If it's just toilet paper and you've got a plunger, give it a few firm plunges to see if it clears. If it doesn't clear after a few tries, stop. You'll make it worse. Don't use chemical drain cleaners in toilets, they don't work and they make it dangerous for us to work on.

4

Turn off the water if the cistern's overflowing

If the cistern won't stop filling and water's running out the overflow, turn off the isolation valve on the supply pipe. If there isn't one, push the ballvalve arm down to stop the flow, or turn off the water at the stop cock under the kitchen sink.

How We Fix Toilet Overflows

1

Diagnose bowl or cistern

If the bowl overflowed, it's blocked. We'll check the pan, the trap, and the waste pipe. If the cistern's overflowing, we'll check the ballvalve (is it shutting off?) and the flush valve (is it sealing?). Different faults, different fixes.

2

Clear a blocked toilet

We'll use a plunger, auger, or drain rods to clear the blockage. Most toilet blockages are in the pan trap (the U-bend inside the toilet) or just after it. If it's further down the waste pipe, we might need to rod it from outside or use a drain snake.

3

Replace the ballvalve

If the cistern won't stop filling, the ballvalve's usually worn or scaled up. We'll replace it with a new one. Modern ones are quieter and more reliable than the old brass ballcocks. Takes about 20 minutes.

4

Replace the flush valve seal

If water's running from the cistern into the bowl constantly, the flush valve seal (the rubber washer at the bottom of the cistern) has perished. We'll replace it. If the whole flush valve is old and crusty, we'll replace the complete unit.

5

Test and check for leaks

Once it's fixed, we'll flush it a few times to make sure it fills and stops correctly, doesn't overflow, and doesn't leak. We'll check the overflow pipe outside (if there is one) to make sure it's not dripping. Job done.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does toilet overflow repair cost in Hull?
Clearing a blocked toilet costs £85 to £150. Replacing a ballvalve costs £80 to £130. Replacing a flush valve seal costs £90 to £150. If the whole flush valve needs replacing, it's £120 to £180. We'll quote you once we've diagnosed the fault.
How long does it take to fix a toilet overflow?
Most fixes are done in 30 minutes to an hour. Clearing a blockage takes 20-40 minutes. Replacing a ballvalve or flush valve seal takes 20-30 minutes. We carry the common parts on the van, so it's usually a same-visit fix.
Why won't my toilet stop filling?
The ballvalve isn't shutting off. Either the washer inside has worn out, the arm's bent, or it's scaled up with limescale. We'll replace the ballvalve with a new one. Modern ones are better than the old brass ballcocks and don't fail as often.
Can I flush the toilet if the cistern's overflowing?
You can, but you'll waste water. If the ballvalve's failed and the cistern's constantly filling, flushing just empties it and it fills again immediately. Turn off the water supply to the toilet (isolation valve on the pipe or push the ballvalve arm down) until we fix it.
What if the overflow pipe is dripping outside?
That means the cistern's overfilling. The overflow pipe's doing its job (stopping the bathroom from flooding), but you're wasting water. If you're on a meter, you're paying for that wasted water. Get the ballvalve replaced and it'll stop.
Why does water run into the toilet bowl constantly?
The flush valve seal at the bottom of the cistern has perished and isn't sealing properly. Water dribbles from the cistern into the bowl constantly. You'll hear it refilling every few minutes. We'll replace the seal or the whole flush valve if it's old.
Can I fix it myself?
If you're handy and you know what you're doing, yes. Ballvalves and flush valve seals are cheap and available from plumbers' merchants. But if you're not confident, call us. It's a cheap job and if you fit the wrong part or cross-thread something, you'll flood the place.
What causes toilet overflow in Hull homes?
Main causes are blocked waste pipes (wet wipes, sanitary products), faulty fill valves that won't shut off, or blocked soil stacks. In Hull's older terraced houses, we often find original cast iron soil pipes that have corroded or shifted, causing blockages. Tree roots from mature gardens in areas like Avenues can also penetrate and block external drains.
