Signs Your Pipes Are Frozen

You turn the tap and nothing comes out, or just a dribble. If it's just one tap, that pipe's frozen. If it's all the taps, the main supply pipe or the pipe from the loft tank is frozen. Check if your neighbours have water. If they don't, it's Yorkshire Water's problem.

Toilet cistern won't refill

You flush and the cistern doesn't refill. The feed pipe from the loft tank or mains is frozen. Common in upstairs toilets in older Hull properties where the feed pipe runs through an external wall or unheated space.

What to Do If Your Pipes Freeze

Turn off the water at the stop cock

If you think a pipe's frozen and might burst when it thaws, turn off the stop cock (usually under the kitchen sink). This stops more water flowing into the frozen section. Open the tap that's not working to relieve pressure.

Warm the room gently

If the frozen pipe's in a room you can heat (bathroom, kitchen, bedroom), turn the heating on and open cupboard doors to let warm air circulate. Don't use a blowtorch, heat gun, or hairdryer directly on the pipe. You'll damage it or cause a fire.

Check for leaks as it thaws

As the pipe thaws, check along its length for drips or wet patches. If it starts leaking, turn off the stop cock and call us. If it thaws completely without leaking, you've got lucky, but lag the pipe properly so it doesn't freeze again.

Are plastic pipes more likely to freeze than copper?
