HomeBoiler RepairsBoiler Pressure Loss

A boiler running on low pressure won't fire, or it heats poorly and then shuts off. Pressure loss means there's a leak somewhere in the system, could be a weeping radiator, a pinhole leak in a pipe, a failed pressure relief valve, or a connection that's loosened. Every time you top up the pressure, you're temporarily fixing the symptom. The leak's still there and will happen again and again Common across Hull, from Spring Bank to Newland Avenue.

Finding a hidden leak is the first step. Sometimes it's obvious, a dripping radiator or a puddle under the boiler. Sometimes it's hidden under the floor or behind walls. We trace it methodically and identify exactly where the water's escaping.

Once we know, we repair it properly, either by reseating a connection, replacing a faulty valve, or patching a pinhole leak. After repair, we pressure-test the system to make sure it holds.

We cover all Hull areas with typical response times of 2 hours. No call-out fee. Our visit includes the first hour's labour when you book with us. Our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan, which also includes £50 off all our services, discounts on parts, £80 off our appliance store, and priority service. If the pressure drops again due to the same fault, we'll fix it at no charge.

Signs of Boiler Pressure Loss

⚠️

Pressure gauge shows red or very low

Most boilers have a gauge on the front. It should read 1-2 bar. If it's below 1 or in the red zone, there's a problem.

⚠️

Pressure drops after you repressurise it

You press the repressurise button, pressure goes back to normal, but within hours or days it drops again. This means there's a leak you haven't found yet.

⚠️

Boiler won't fire when pressure is low

Once pressure drops below about 0.5 bar, the boiler's safety lock prevents it from firing. This is a safety feature, but it means no heating.

⚠️

Visible drips under the boiler

Water pooling directly under the boiler means a seal or internal component is leaking. This needs urgent attention.

⚠️

Wet patches around radiators or pipes

Water seeping from a joint or radiator indicates a leak somewhere in the system. Even small seeps add up over days.

Finding the Leak

1

Check visually around all radiators and pipes

Look under radiators, at joints, and along pipes for water droplets or wet patches. Wipe any drips dry and watch to see where water reappears.

2

Feel pipes and radiators for dampness

Move your hand along pipes and over radiators. Even if you don't see water, dampness or a wet patch indicates where the leak is.

3

Check the boiler connections

Look at the pipes going into the boiler (inlet and outlet). Check the safety relief valve, it's a small pipe coming from the boiler. A drip here is normal occasionally, but constant dripping is a problem.

4

If the leak is hidden, ask for a leak detection service

If you can't see where water is going, tell us. We have equipment to trace underground or hidden leaks, or we can look under the boiler with a mirror and light.

5

In the meantime, note how fast pressure drops

Does it take hours or days to lose pressure? This tells us how serious the leak is, a fast drop needs urgent repair.

How We Fix Pressure Loss

Our repair process depends on where the leak is:

1

Locate the leak precisely

We look everywhere: radiator connections, expansion vessel, relief valve outlet, pipes. We'll use drying paper to confirm the exact spot.

2

Tighten loose connections

Sometimes a compression joint just needs tightening. We'll try this first, it's quick and costs nothing if it works.

3

Replace leaking seals or washers

Radiator valves or pipe unions often just need a new washer or seal. We can replace these on the spot.

4

Replace a failed valve

The filling loop, pressure relief, or a radiator valve might be faulty. We'll replace it with a new one.

5

Repressurise the system

Once the leak is fixed, we repressurise using the filling loop (a flexible hose connected to the cold water supply) until pressure is 1.5 bar. We'll show you how to do this yourself if it happens again.

6

Test under pressure

We leave the boiler running and check no new leaks appear. It should hold pressure for at least an hour.

Common Causes of Pressure Loss in Hull

Here are the typical culprits:

Slow leak from a radiator valve

Radiator control valves (TRVs) wear out and develop tiny seeps. You might not notice water, but pressure drops steadily over days. Replacing the valve stops it.

Worn washer on a compression joint

Pipes connected with compression fittings (common in older systems) rely on rubber washers. After 10+ years, washers harden and shrink, causing seeps. Replacement is quick.

Pinhole leak in copper pipe

Copper pipes can develop pinholes from corrosion (especially in areas with soft water like central Hull). The leak might be tiny but steady. We can patch temporarily or re-pipe the section.

Failed safety relief valve

This valve dumps water if pressure gets too high. If it leaks constantly or drips, it needs replacement. It's a small job, £80-£150.

Faulty filling loop

The flexible hose used to repressurise the system sometimes develops a leak itself. If your loop is visible, check for drips. Replace if faulty.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does fixing boiler pressure loss cost in Hull?
Finding and repairing a small leak costs £100-£250 across Hull and surrounding areas. Replacing a faulty pressure relief valve costs £80-£150. Expansion vessel recharge costs £80-£120. If there's no leak and you just need repressurising, that's £40-£60.
How long does it take to fix boiler pressure loss?
Finding a hidden leak takes 1-3 hours with pressure testing and inspection. Repairing the leak takes another within 2 hours. Simple fixes like pressure relief valves or repressurising take 30-60 minutes, whether you're in Newland Avenue, Cottingham, or Spring Bank.
Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?
There's a leak somewhere in the system, pipes, radiators, boiler heat exchanger, or radiator valves. Even a small pinhole leak causes pressure loss. We'll pressure-test sections to isolate where it's leaking, then fix it.
Can I repressurise my boiler myself?
Yes, if your boiler has a filling loop (usually under the boiler). Open both valves slowly until the gauge reads 1.0-1.5 bar, then close them. Check your boiler manual for exact instructions. If pressure drops again within days, you've got a leak.
Is losing boiler pressure an emergency?
Not immediately, but the boiler won't work until you repressurise it. If you've got no heating or hot water in winter, that's urgent. If it loses pressure repeatedly, there's a leak that needs fixing to prevent damage.
What if I can't find the leak causing pressure loss?
Many leaks are hidden under floors, inside walls, or behind radiators. We use pressure testing to isolate which section is leaking, then thermal imaging or visual inspection to pinpoint the exact spot. We'll find it.
Could the pressure relief valve be the problem?
Yes, if the pressure relief valve is faulty, it vents water outside even when pressure is normal. You might see a small drip from the overflow pipe outside. Replacing the valve costs £80-£150 and takes about an hour.
How often should I need to repressurise my boiler?
Ideally never, once it's pressurised, it should stay there. If you're topping up every few weeks, you've got a leak. Once or twice a year might be normal from air venting, but more often means a problem.
