HomeBlocked DrainsManhole & Drain Cover Repair

Manhole covers and drain covers take a battering. They're driven over, walked on, and exposed to Hull weather year-round. Eventually they crack, break, or subside into the ground. A broken cover is dangerous (trip hazard, people can fall in), and a sunken cover will flood when it rains.

We'll repair or replace broken covers and frames. If the frame's sunk below ground level, we'll lift it, pack the base, and reset it so it's flush with the surface. If the cover's cracked or the frame's corroded, we'll fit a new one.

There's no call-out fee when you book with us. We'll quote you before we start digging, and our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan.

Common Manhole & Drain Cover Problems

⚠️

Cracked or broken cover

Cast iron covers crack if they're old and brittle. Plastic covers crack if they're driven over too much. A cracked cover is dangerous because it can collapse under weight. If it's in a driveway or path, replace it before someone's car wheel goes through it.

⚠️

Cover sunk below ground level

The ground around the manhole has settled or been built up, and the cover's now a dip in the path or lawn. Water pools in the dip and the cover floods every time it rains. Common in older Hull properties where paths and drives have been resurfaced over the years without lifting the cover.

⚠️

Rattling or loose cover

The cover rattles when you walk on it or when cars drive over it. Either the frame's worn, the cover's the wrong size, or someone's fitted a replacement that doesn't sit properly. Loose covers are noisy and wear out faster. We'll replace or refit it.

⚠️

Corroded frame or missing bolts

The cast iron frame's rusted through or the bolts have corroded and snapped. The cover won't sit securely and could lift out if driven over. Common in older properties around Spring Bank and Princes Avenue where the frames are original Victorian or Edwardian cast iron.

⚠️

Flooding around the cover

Water pools around the manhole cover when it rains because the cover's below the surrounding surface or the seal's failed. If the cover's in a low spot, we'll lift and reset it. If the frame's damaged, we'll replace it.

What to Do Before We Arrive

1

Keep people and vehicles off it

If the cover's cracked or broken, keep people and vehicles off it until we've replaced it. A broken cover can collapse under weight and someone could fall into the manhole chamber. Put cones or barriers around it if it's in a busy area.

2

Take a photo

If the cover's damaged, take a photo before we arrive. If you're claiming on insurance (some home insurance covers manhole damage), you'll need photos. Also helps us know what we're dealing with before we turn up.

3

Check if it's your responsibility

Manholes in your garden, drive, or path are usually your responsibility. Manholes in the street or pavement are Yorkshire Water's or the council's. If it's on your property, you pay to fix it. If it's on public land, call the council or Yorkshire Water.

4

Clear the area

Move any bins, pots, or vehicles parked over or near the manhole. We'll need clear access to lift the cover, work on the frame, and fit a new cover if needed.

How We Repair Manhole Covers

1

Lift the old cover

We'll use manhole keys or crowbars to lift the old cover. Cast iron covers are heavy (40-60kg), so it's a two-person job. If it's seized into the frame with rust or muck, we'll free it off carefully without damaging the frame.

2

Inspect the frame and chamber

We'll check if the frame's sound or if it's cracked, corroded, or sitting at the wrong height. We'll also check the brickwork at the top of the chamber. If the brickwork's crumbled, we'll rebuild it so the frame sits securely.

3

Raise or reset the frame if needed

If the cover's sunk below ground level, we'll lift the frame, pack the base with concrete or mortar, and reset it flush with the surface. If it's been buried by a new path or drive, we'll raise it to the new level using frame extension kits.

4

Fit the new cover

We'll fit a new cover that matches the frame size and load rating (pedestrian, light traffic, or heavy traffic). Cast iron for driveways, plastic or composite for gardens and paths. We'll bed it in place and make sure it sits flat and doesn't rattle.

5

Seal and reinstate

We'll seal the frame into the surrounding surface (tarmac, block paving, concrete, whatever's there) so water doesn't leak around the edges. If we've dug out the area to reset the frame, we'll backfill and reinstate the surface.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does manhole cover repair cost in Hull?
Replacing just the cover costs £120 to £200. Replacing the frame and cover costs £250 to £400. Raising a sunken cover and resetting the frame costs £180 to £300. Depends on the size, load rating, and how much work's needed. We'll quote you once we've seen it.
How long does manhole cover replacement take?
Replacing just the cover takes 30 minutes to an hour. Replacing the frame and cover takes half a day because we need to break out the old frame, reset the new one in concrete, and let it cure. Raising a sunken frame takes a few hours depending on how much digging and rebuilding is needed.
Can I just replace the cover without the frame?
If the frame's sound and the right size, yes. We'll fit a new cover that matches the frame. But if the frame's corroded, cracked, or sitting at the wrong height, you need to replace the frame as well or the new cover won't sit properly.
What load rating do I need?
For gardens and paths (pedestrian only), a class A or B cover is fine. For driveways (cars driving over), you need class C. For roads or heavy vehicles, class D. We'll fit the right rating for the location. Don't put a light-duty cover in a driveway, it'll crack.
Why has my manhole cover sunk?
The ground around it has been built up (new path, new tarmac, raised flower beds), or the ground underneath has settled. The cover's now in a dip and water pools on it. We'll raise the frame to match the new surface level so water drains away.
Can you raise the cover without replacing it?
If the cover and frame are sound, we can raise the frame using extension kits. These are metal or plastic spacers that sit between the old frame and the new surface. Cheaper than replacing the whole thing, and quicker.
Who's responsible for manhole covers?
If it's on your property (garden, drive, path), you're responsible. If it's in the street, pavement, or public land, it's Yorkshire Water's (for sewers) or the council's (for surface water drains). Check who owns the drain before you pay for repairs.
Can I upgrade my manhole cover to a sealed one?
Yes, sealed manhole covers are a good idea if you're getting smells or want better security. They cost £120-£180 fitted. We fit lockable covers, recessed covers that sit flush with paving, and sealed covers that prevent odours. Popular in Newland and Anlaby where gardens are used for entertaining.
